What Faction Would You Be? (+ Int’l Giveaway!)

Book Discussion

What Faction Are You? (+ Giveaway!)

A lot of us are counting down the days to Allegiant’s release, so I’d say it’s a good time to chat and giveaway some books :D. When I was listening to Divergent, one of the first things that struck me (after we found out about everything I mean >.>) is what faction I would choose. I mean, it’s a big freaking decision right?? But past that, I started wondering if I would have even been born, given what factions my parents’ might have chosen! Since if your parents chose different factions, then they wouldn’t have met right?? I started freaking myself out a bit, but that’s besides the point (and my mom reads my blog so I can’t worry too much ;-) ).

All the info is going to be based on how things are ideally in the dystopia of Divergent so that we can avoid spoilers and not worry about how things got out of control ;-).

Background: If you haven’t read Divergent yet (doooo iiiiit), then here’s what you probably want to know. Divergent is set in a future dystopia where the population split into five factions based on what they thought caused the war and destruction previously. Children are raised in their parents’ faction until they come of age. Then they can choose which faction they belong in for the rest of their lives. Leaving your parents’ faction is a bit stressful, as you can imagine ;-).

The Factions

Quick refresher on the factions sound good? All images and descriptions are from Divergent Fans!

dauntless

Dauntless: They value courage and bravery and believe in proving your bravery, protecting others, guarding the city, and pushing your fears away. They like to jump from trains and dress in black ;-).

abnegation

Abnegation: They value selflessness and avoiding vanity, greed, envy, etc. They dress in grey clothing, wear no jewelry or make-up, keep quiet, and volunteer for all the unpleasant tasks important in the city. They also serve as the governing body because they are supposed to be completely self-less.

candor

Candor: They value honesty to a fault. They are very expressive and loud because they don’t want to lie through hiding their feelings. They think the truth is black and white and so always tell all of it no matter what. They also wear black and white because they’re mimes it matches their values.

amnity

Amity: The Amity are the hippies of the bunch ;-). They believe in peace and kindness to everyone, above all else. They are against aggression of any kind. They wear bright yellows and reds because those are apparently the colors of happiness?

erudite

Erudite: The Erudite believe knowledge can fix everything. They value intelligence and research. They wear blue because research has shown that it calms the body and mind. They do all the cool science experiments, but they are pretty uptight. (Which they should know leads to lower productivity and creative insight >.>)

So! What faction do you think you would choose? After much deliberation (and again before the events of Divergent happen), I think I would probably be Erudite. I love books and reading, but I’m also in grad school, which is kind of like Erudite’s portion of the city in our world ;-).

Perhaps more interestingly, what faction do you think you would have been born into? My parents are both quite geeky and book-loving, so I think it’s likely I would have been born into Erudite. However my mom (<3) does love martial arts and kick-butt heroines, so I could see that influencing her choice ;-).

  1. To be quite honest, this is probably the hardest question ever. Hmm, probably Dauntless or Erudite. However, I could be in almost all of them. (((I’m so indecisive))))

  2. I like you on Facebook as Carolsue Anderson
    Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net

  3. I think it would be Erudite now, maybe born into Amity? Not really sure….LOL
    Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net

  4. Probably born into Amity or Candor. But I like to think I’m a bit of both or a trio of factions so….Divergent?

  5. I would like to say I’m totally a Dauntless Bad-Ass.. hold on a minute.. just checking.
Oh, Okay, that’s one of the female MC in my UF reads not me. In reality, I’m probably more
    the Amity type. :)

  6. I would have been born into Candor and probably would have stayed there.

  7. probably Erudite, but I would end up in Amity

  8. Francis Casabuena says:

born as Candor, ends up in Erudite. Thanks for the giveaway!

  10. I would be born into abnegation or erudite, but would probably choose dauntless ’cause I’m adventurous/crazy like that. LOL!!! Thanks for a giveaway! :)

  11. Jennifer Christensen (@bookaholics8991) says:

I would probably be Erudite. I don’t know what I would be born into as none of those sound like my parents.

  12. Anne Consolacion says:

I’d be a Erutide because I love doing research and gaining knowledge. :)

  13. I’ll probably be born into the Erudite faction. I mean, I must have a high GPA for a reason right?

  14. I think I’d be born into Erudite and end up in Candor.

  15. Fatma Shahin says:

Probably Erudite – the others are waay too intense for me :D

  16. I think I would have been born into Abnegation, but if I had a choice I would definetely chose Amity. It sounds like such a peaceful place to live in.:)

  17. Amity. I seriously would choose that one. Haha

  18. Nicki Cheung says:

Never read this book, but it sound very intriguing, so i Divergent would be my first pick!! :)

  19. Born into Amity, but choosen Erudite.

  20. I have no idea what faction I’d be in. Does that make me Divergent? Although, I do love learning so I might be Erudite. (That is, before some of them went nuts.)

    • I suppose you’re test would turn out Divergent and then you would still have to pick somewhere ;-) And yes, definitely before the crazy times Erudite!

  21. I always liked the look of Erudite (all that access to huuuge libraries!) but I’m not sure which faction I’d actually be born into… I just know it definitely wouldn’t be Dauntless because I’m a coward, haha.

  22. I think I would have chosen Erudite (as you said, the pre-events of Divergent Erudite) and I think I would have been born in Abnegation. So like Caleb, except I’d like to think I wouldn’t have made the same choices that he did.
Ooh and thanks for the giveaway! I can’t wait to see what happens in Allegiant!

  23. I don’t know what faction I would have chosen, but I took the quiz they had (have? I don’t know if it’s still there) and it was a toss up between Candor and Dauntless. I mean, I can see myself in all of them though… which I guess is the whole point. I don’t know. Maybe I’m Divergent. haha.

    • Hehe, the test doesn’t have to change your choice though, it’s still your choice ;-) *puts on mind control sounds*

  24. Hmmm. I think I probably would have been born into Erudite. I do value knowledge, even if I don’t really stand by all of their beliefs.
Anddd, I probably would have chosen them as well. There are aspects of the other factions that interest me, but then there is always something that makes me refrain from choosing them as a faction. I don’t like that Abnegation are so, well, boring and emotionless (haha), I don’t like that Candor are so obnoxious, I don’t like that Dauntless can be kinda stupid, and I don’t really like that Amity refuses to take part in stuff. Sure there are things I don’t like about Erudite (hello, have you read the books? Haha), but I think that the value of knowledge is pretty important.
    So there you go :D

    • Yeah, Erudite get kind of a bad rap, but I think before Divergent happened they probably started out cool ;-)

  25. I think I probably would’ve been born into Candor, and would fit in with the Erudite. I took 1 of the faction quizzes in a free booklet and I got Erudite, and I really like their faction (even though they don’t really get cast in a good light in the books). But I remember reading something that said that Erudite’s didn’t allow pets, and if that were true, I’d definitely want to be Amity instead! Loved this question & loved reading what everyone else thinks! :D Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

    Alice @ Alice in Readerland

    • What, no pets?? That seems silly, everyone knows that pets decrease stress and improve health and mood, I think the Erudite should require fuzzy creature time every day :D

  26. I figure I’d be divergent in the end. My natural inclination is to behave as though I’m Abnegation. I’m a pacifist at heart, so Amity is also a strong choice, but that also fits in with Abnegation. But I’d yearn for Erudite, because I’m naturally curious and love learning and research and have been known to read textbooks for leisure.

Hard to say which I would have been born into. Probably either Abnegation (my parents raised me in such a way as to convince me that who I was and what I wanted was the least important thing, and what they wanted was far more important) or Erudite (my only self-worth and the main form of encouragement I got from my parents was academic).

    • True enough, I feel like most people would really, since our culture today encourages all those traits. Ah, that sounds kind of not fun, I’m sorry :(

  27. Amity- they are a cool bunch. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  28. Born and bred into Amity, thank you.

  29. I don’t know; I reject the idea of factions in the first place, but if I had to choose one, I’d probably choose Erudite. I think they get kind of a bad rap. But I am a really scholarly person, and I love learning.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Totally fair! Thinking about them, they don’t really make that much sense. No one only fits into one personality trait! Yeah, Erudite definitely get a bad rap in the books, but I think outside of the books they would be rocking!

  30. Yea ….. Not sure you would have been born, although we MIGHT have both been Erudite.

Although …. yet ANOTHER book to add to the the shelves!!! I need to take a speed reading course….

    • Hehe, I suspected as much ;-) There is a good free speed reading app for iPhone! It actually helped me noticeably in just a couple sessions since it helped me figure out how to actually speed read. Also audiobooks :D

  31. Linda Trinklein says:

    born into Abnegation
hmmm its so hard to choose!! Id probably be Amity

  32. Meghan Stith says:

I would be a Candor. Because I’m loud and honest!!

    • Awesome! Do you wear a lot of white and black? I never really got that part of the factions, I don’t feel like clothing colors matter that much ;-)

  33. I think I might be born in Abnegation. I myself would probably pick Amity or Erudite – it’s hard to pick just one. I’m very quiet and peaceful which would fit perfectly with Amity but I also love to learn. The Erudite are very uptight though, so I think the Amity people would be more fun to be around, even though they’re a bit weird at times

    • I know right? It would kind of suck to have to flatten your personality to only one aspect really :(. Amity would probably let you read fiction books more than Erudite, so that would be important!

  34. Dauntless for both! I love wearing black;) Thansk for the awesome giveaway!

    • Sweet! I used to wear nothing but black in my tomboy phase, and now it’s mostly just black shirts and jeans, haha. I do have tattoos though!

  35. I think I would have been born Erudite and stayed there, although as you say, they’re far more likeable before the events in Divergent! Thanks for the giveaway :)

  36. Erudite first then Dauntless

  37. I’m not brave enough for Dauntless, or giving enough for Abnegation. Sometimes I have no tact, so does that mean I’m Candor? I’m a little Erudite, but not super smart, so it’s really difficult to say what faction I would be in. Let’s just say I’m glad we don’t live in the Divergent series, but I am very glad the books were written and the movie was made.

  38. Mary Preston says:

I don’t know yet. Needing to catch up.

  39. Ooh, what a great discussion, Anya! My sister and I recently got these little Allegiant promo booklet things and there was a quiz in them to see which faction you match up with (I believe this quiz is also in the back of the Divergent paperback). I got Erudite, which is definitely what I would choose anyway. My husband was tied between Candor and Erudite — does this mean he’s Divergent?!?!

I never really thought about which faction I would have been born into, though! I love that you’ve brought this up… I’m trying to decide which faction I think my parents would have chosen, and I’m having some trouble. I’m teetering between Abnegation and Amity, because they’re both really friendly, giving people who just want to help everyone. Either way, I’m hoping that means they’d have ended up in the same faction, which means I would have been born. So maybe I’d be like Caleb and transfer from Abnegation to Erudite!
Kelley (Another Novel Read) recently posted…Things I Think About – Part I: PronunciationMy Profile

    • Haha, I own the Divergent trade paperback, but I ended up listening to it on audio, so I never saw the quiz! Hopefully he can just choose Erudite and everything will be fine! >.>

Thanks :D My brain likes to over analyze ;-) Sweet, let’s hope that the similarities between your life and Caleb’s end there >.>

  40. There’s no doubt, I’d be Erudite. And my dad would have been Erudite, too, so I imagine that’s where I would’ve been born and stayed. And I almost feel like that’s sort of how my life has been. My family really values the pursuit of knowledge, sometimes above all else.
None of the other ones sound like me at all!
Interesting question! I love seeing the responses.

  42. LeKeisha Thomas says:

    Probably Abnegation:-)

  43. Marie-Claude says:

    I would be erudite.

  44. hard to say but i would probably be born erudite ( if i follow my mother then definitively) but i guess i’m more candor ( i’m a bit of both so hard to tell which one is predominant)

  46. Adelynne Chang says:

Hmm… I would probably be born in Erudite but I’d definitely switch to Dauntless. Leaning how to fight and use guns? That’s totally my type of thing- and you get to overcome your fears! There’s a lot of freedom too, so Dauntless kids are more independent, I guess.

  47. I would’ve probably been born into Abnegation but switched to Amity. Or maybe vice versa!

  48. Simona Ioana says:

I would have been born in Candor but I would ended up as Erudite.

  49. I would definitely have been in Erudite – I love knowledge and pretty much believe it can solve everything.

My Mum would have been Abnegation and my Dad would have been Candor, so like you said – I probably wouldn’t even have been born!

    • Yey knowledge! I’m definitely hoping to save the world through research >.>

Hehe, fortunately that wasn’t the case :D

  50. Definitely Amity! They’re stress free, laid back, and outright cool. All of the other factions have too much drama, but the Amity have a healthier lifestyle. Plus, I’m neither selfless, nor brave :P

I would be born as Amity but end up as a Candor…

    • Awesome! Do you like the Candor in the books? Do you think you could stand them? ;-)

      • Nevey Berry says:

I did not like them or fully hated them it’s a hate/love relationship but in real life I get in complicated problems because I am a Candro like person so I might be happy living within a world of only black or white truth and no shades in between.
